Student Life and Activities Archdiocesan Art Contest - All grades have the opportunity to participate in the Archdiocesan Art Contest. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia suggests a theme for the contest. Additional art contest are available. Service Club - Students from grades five to eight are welcome to be a part of the Service Club. The purpose of the club is to teach our students to reach out to those less fortunate in their parish and surrounding community. They are encouraged to use their time and talents to help others. Students participate in various outreach programs during and after school that encourage them to be mindful of the needs of others. They regularly visit Don Guanella, a school for physically and mentally challenged students, to play games and make crafts with the students. They also have an active brown bag lunch program for the homeless. Several times a month the students make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches that they place in a bag with a drink and snack. The lunches re delivered to a local shelter. Other service programs include making casseroles for Saint John's Hospice and monthly collections for the less fortunate. Field Trips - The use of field trips to supplement instruction is worthwhile to the educational process. Each class is permitted two field trips a year to an educational environment. D.A.R.E. - A Haverford Township police officer educates fifth grade students in a Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program. Students attend this course during school hours, one day per week for seventeen weeks. Parents are invited to attend a ceremony at the completion of the program. Athletics - Athletic teams are coordinated by the CYO. There are many JV and Varsity boys' and girls' teams in which students participate: soccor, cheerleading, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, football, and track. Computer Club - Sacred Heart CYO sponsors a computer club with its own website: http://www.shmanoacyo.com.The website is created and maintained by the CYO Computer Club. Altar Servers - This ministry is available to boys and girls in grades six to eight who are interested and dependable. Students are trained in serving Sunday, Holy Week, First Communion, Confirmation, Funeral and Wedding Masses. Choir - This ministry is available to boys and girls in grades five to eight who are interested and dependable. Children have the opportunity to cantor at liturgies throughout the year. Band - Students in grades four to eight are eligible to join the band. The band instructor is available on Friday mornings for lessons. The band has at least two concerts during the school year and accomplished students are asked to audition for the Archdiocesan Band festival. Student Council - The Eighth Grade Class officers of the Student Council are elected by the students in grades five, six and seven and by the faculty. Each class also elects a Student Council Representative. Mission Representative - One students from each class represents his or her classroom. The mission representative makes the class aware of the poor and is responsible for various mission drives in the school. Catholic Youth Organization (CYO)
